WHY WERE THE PYRAMIDS BUILT?
The Ancient Egyptians had strong religious beliefs and followed the god Horus. Horus was the Egyptian god of the sky, light and goodness and was depicted as a falcon who soared above and protected the land of the Pharaohs.
The Egyptian people believed that each Pharaoh became Horus on Earth and was reborn as Horus after their death and therefore it was very important to them to protect the bodies of their pharaohs by building pyramid tombs that made them immortal. ----------------------------------------------- Anubis was the jackal headed brother of Horus and the 'Ruler of the Underworld' and decided if the pharaoh was worthy of afterlife. He was known as the 'funerary god' and during the funeral of the pharaoh, masks of Anubis would be worn . His godly task was to hold the scales on which the pharaoh's heart was weighed. If the heart was pure, the dead would be led by Anubis to an afterlife. If not, the soul would be destroyed. |
